
The CORAL consortium consists of nine international members, incluing universities, research centers and industrial partners. These are:

Technical University of Darmstadt (TUDA)
The Institute of Energy Systems and Technology at TU Darmstadt is a leading research institution in power plant technology and CO2 capture technologies. With extensive facilities including a 1 MWth pilot plant for dual fluidized bed systems, the institute conducts cutting-edge research in multiphase flows and combustion processes. A team of over 20 researchers and technicians operates state-of-the-art equipment, including a specialized capacitance probe for fluidized bed measurements and an electrically heated lab-scale reactor. Under the leadership of Prof. Bernd Epple, the institute has successfully coordinated numerous international research projects, establishing itself as a key player in sustainable energy technology development.

Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC)
The Instituto de Carboquímica (ICB), part of Spain’s largest public research institution, houses a dynamic Combustion and Gasification research group of 20 experts. Specializing in gas-solid reaction kinetics and fluidized bed processes, they’ve developed significant expertise in Chemical Looping processes since 2000. Their facilities include multiple fluidized reactor units and advanced analytical systems. With over 200 publications in redox processes, ICB-CSIC has participated in numerous EU projects and collaborates with energy and oil sectors. Their work spans from laboratory research to prototype scale demonstration, making them a crucial player in clean energy technology development.

Chalmers University of Technology
The Division for Energy Technology at Chalmers University stands as a pioneer in fluidization bed technology applications. Their impressive facilities include multiple chemical looping reactors and large-scale biomass combustion units. As world leaders in chemical looping applications, they’ve tested over 100 oxygen carrier materials. The division’s expertise extends to fluid-dynamics research, utilizing innovative diagnostic techniques like magnetic particle tracking and THz radar for solids concentration measurements. Their collaborative approach encompasses both experimental research and industrial applications, participating in numerous EU projects and developing practical solutions for commercial-scale operations.

Fortum Power and Heat Polska
Fortum Power and Heat Polska, a subsidiary of the leading clean-energy company Fortum, specializes in heat production and distribution across five Polish cities. As part of a global network operating over 150 power plants, they contribute to Fortum’s position as the third-largest power generator in Nordic countries. Their expertise encompasses various energy solutions, including hydro, CHP, nuclear, solar, and wind power generation. Focused on decarbonization and sustainable energy solutions, they provide comprehensive services for the power generation industry and smart energy solutions for consumers.

Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT)
LUT University’s Laboratory of Thermal Engineering excels in energy conversion systems utilizing multiphase flows. Their expertise focuses on computational modeling of fluidized bed processes, including combustion, gasification, and calcium looping. The laboratory employs both proprietary and commercial software solutions, developing cutting-edge approaches to thermal engineering challenges. Their research team specializes in dynamic modeling of circulating fluidized beds and dual fluidized bed systems for novel carbon capture processes. LUT’s commitment to sustainable engineering solutions contributes significantly to renewable energy technologies and climate change mitigation efforts.

Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI)
The Group of Energy Conversion Systems (GECOS) at Politecnico di Milano, Italy’s largest engineering school, leads research in power plant decarbonization and renewable energy integration. Their team of over 48 researchers excels in carbon capture technologies and hybrid power systems. GECOS collaborates with major energy companies and equipment manufacturers, participating in numerous EU projects. Their expertise includes developing software for combined design and operational optimization of integrated power plants, considering various electricity markets and optimal plant configurations. Ranked 13th globally in engineering, POLIMI continues to pioneer innovative energy solutions.

Pometon S.p.a.
For nearly eight decades, Pometon has been an industry leader in powder metallurgy, specializing in both ferrous and non-ferrous metallic powders. With an impressive annual production capacity of 80,000 tonnes, including 60,000 tonnes of iron powders, the company offers 600 distinct powder types. Their sustainable approach utilizes electric arc furnaces with scrap as raw material. Pometon’s state-of-the-art R&D department collaborates closely with universities and research centers worldwide, developing customized powder solutions. Their extensive facilities include multiple electric arc and induction furnaces, water atomizer lines, and advanced research equipment, positioning them at the forefront of metal powder innovation.

Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW)
As a global leader in fluidized bed technology, Sumitomo SHI FW specializes in advanced steam generators and gasifiers. Their impressive portfolio includes nearly 540 CFB boilers up to 550 MWe capacity, with designs reaching 800 MWe. Known for groundbreaking achievements, SFW delivered the world’s first CFB, first supercritical CFB, and largest biomass plant. Their commitment to sustainable energy solutions focuses on decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization of the energy industry. With extensive expertise in multifuel capabilities and low emissions technology, SFW continues to pioneer innovative solutions for the evolving energy sector.

VGBE ENERGY EV
VGBE serves as the technical association for energy plant operators worldwide, focusing on power, heat, cooling plants, and energy storage solutions. As an independent technical competence center, they support international members in implementing innovations and strategic tasks. VGBE actively contributes to political and social debates on technical issues, emphasizing the importance of controllable generation and renewable energies. Their expertise spans system integration, plant engineering, and the development of climate-friendly energy systems, making them a crucial voice in shaping the future of sustainable energy production.
